Lighting is magic that, at its best, profoundly affects the experiences of audience members without their quite realizing it is happening. Taiga believes good lighting design is elegant, bold and risk-taking without being intrusive, and hinges on an intricate understanding of the characters’ internal experiences.
She fell in love with lighting while attending Cornerstone Theater Company’s summer institute in Los Angeles in 2008, where she worked as lighting associate under the mentorship of Geoff Korf. The challenge of lighting a 60-member cast on an outdoor city block instilled in her a love of lighting nontraditional spaces and an ability to creatively maximize limited resources on challenging projects. She trained under the mentorship of Kristeen Crosser at Reed College, and went on to work extensively within the Portland, Oregon and Southern Vermont theater communities.
Taiga draws inspiration from the inner landscapes of characters’ experiences, and specializes in nontraditional spaces with limited technical resources. Her process hinges on close collaboration with other members of the design team to create an integrated, seamless production. She aims to transform physical space through intricate but subtle design which enhances, rather than overpowers, performers and other design elements.
